upon graduation with a communication and sociology (minor) degree, senior jacob lamoureux will begin a customer success specialist position at madison logic, a marketing-technology company headquartered in new york city. jacob was hired before graduation as a result of the networking he established while completing an internship in the customer service department for madison logic this past summer. additionally, he used uhart’s career studio in the office of career and professional development. jacob says, “uhart helped provide me with the resources i needed to be successful and to secure a job before graduation."
beginning his uhart journey in hillyer college, jacob was unsure what his future would hold, and was curious as to how being a hillyer student would set him apart from other students. he says, “i quickly came to learn how a hillyer education is much more than the first two years of your undergraduate career. a hillyer college education provides the structure and academic resources fundamental to developing a strong college career.”
jacob says that he would not be where he is today if it weren't for the foundational guidance and conducive learning environment at hillyer college. uhart prepared jacob to learn by connecting him with exceptional faculty who cared about his success in and out of the classroom. the small learning environment gave jacob the time and academic attention he needed to learn. he claims that “without this close academic structure between students, faculty, and course material, i am convinced that my college education would not have been as fulfilling.”
Overall, Jacob describes his uhart experience as “incredible.” He was inspired to grow as an individual and a student. For example, he was elected into the Student Government Association twice — once as the Hillyer College Senator and once as the College of Arts & Science Senator. These positions showed Jacob the unity, strength and integrity of the university of hartford community.
when asked what his favorite thing was about uhart, he says it is the eclectic and diverse community. “students from various global backgrounds, religions, academic interests, and so much more, make this university unique,” says jacob. he believes that “nowhere else can you find a campus which embodies so much passion and devotion while also having fun in a variety of ways.”
jacob encourages new students to take advantage of every opportunity that they can, and try new things with this in mind. by doing this, he says “you will learn more about yourself and your personal interests than you could ever imagine.” additionally, he believes it is important to ask for help when you need it. he says that faculty, staff, and even his classmates were there to help him succeed. according to jacob, “uhart has a glowing community that wants to see you grow and become the professional you are meant to be.”
finally, jacob says that he would be remiss if he did not draw attention to some of the exceptional faculty that helped him along his collegiate journey:
- professor michael robinson taught me to get back up when i feel as if i've been knocked down.
- professor rebecca townsend showed me the true meaning of effective civic communication, a lesson i will carry with me for the rest of my life.
- professor michele troy helped me leap over hurdles of english literature, after continuously feeling uninspired in my high school setting.
- professor wick griswold taught me how to love and appreciate the world around me, and to keep asking more questions.
- professor melinda miceli and karen schermerhorn both empowered me to believe in my understanding of concepts greater than myself, and for that i am indebted to their wisdom.
- dean david goldenberg showed me what success with integrity looks like, a trait one cannot learn in any textbook.
